Periodontology is the dental medical area responsible for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the periodontium (tooth, gum, periodontal ligament, bone and tooth root).Periodontal diseases may be divided in two big groups: gingivitis and periodontitis.
The bacteria accumulation near the gingival groove may lead to an inflammation of the gingiva, causing redness and bleeding – gingivitis.
When gum in this this state is not correctly diagnosed and treated it may evolve into more serious situations, denominated as periodontitis.
With periodontitis gum recession and consequent bone loss occurs, which may lead to the loss of dental pieces.
In order to avoid the progression of this state, it is recommendable to do scaling, every 3, 6 to 12 months, according to its diagnosis.
In more serious and advanced cases, it may be necessary to resort to periodontal surgery treatment for bone augmentation or gingival recession overlay.
